Nancy J. Smyth is a licensed clinical social worker, professor, and dean at the University at Buffalo (UB) School of Social Work. Smyth first began thinking and writing about technology in social work education and practice over 30 years ago, including integrating digital technology in teaching practice. However, in the last decade, she has been more systematically exploring the uses and implications of digital technologies for social work practice and education through her role as dean. Her accomplishments include expanding the social work profession’s presence on the Internet through the first the first school-sponsored social work podcast, UB’s inSocialWork, interviews that feature social work research and practice. inSocialWork now has listeners in over 200 countries and all 50 states, and over 1.5 million downloads. Her other initiatives through UB include the use of infographics to promote self-care (How to Flourish in Social Work) and a multi-media guide on the professional use of social media (Social Worker’s Guide to Social Media infographic and videos). Most recently, Smyth co-authored a CSWE Press book on Teaching Social Work with Digital Technology (Hitchcock, Sage, & Smyth, 2018).
