Dr. Bruce Hoskins is a Professor of Sociology at MiraCosta College, which is located in Oceanside, CA where he was born and raised. He is also a spoken word poet (aka the Professor) and is dedicated to the voice found in spoken word poetry. His desire to empower student voices has led him to incorporate his poems along with other artists, e.g. Ant Black, Rudy Francisco, and Imani Cezanne, into how he teaches so that students can connect the educational material to emotional content. In other words, poetry is used as first person narratives of sociological concepts, e.g. poverty, sexism, and racism, to try and help students understand how these issues affect our everyday lives.
Bruce Hoskins started his educational career as a community college student and truly values his AA in Mathematics from MiraCosta College. Once he transferred to the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), he found his real passion in Ethnic Studies and was willing to change majors even though he was a slow reader and did not consider himself good at writing. He has now earned a Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Southern California with an emphasis on race and ethnic relations and multiracial identity formation.
Bruce Hoskins currently lives in Oceanside, CA and has been married for over twenty years and has four children ages twenty-five, sixteen, fourteen and seven. He is a born-again Christian and goes to Calvary Chapel Oceanside and reads a chapter of the Bible every day. His hobbies include playing basketball, Dungeons and Dragons (Pathfinder), Clash of Clans, Pokemon Go and Texas Hold ‘Em.
